Do you have one? Do they work? Try to make a New Year resolution that could help the world, what would you choose? Why should people make the same resolution? Feel free to post and discuss below as a "blog assignment" entry.
I think that the entire idea of a New Years resolution is flawed from the start. If you wanted to commit yourself to truly doing something, even something as little as eat one carrot per day to start a healthy diet, why wait until the new year to do so? Furthermore, why wait until January first to start thinking of ways to improve you're life, or the lives of others? In a sense, the new years resolution is a way for lazy people to put off change for the last few months of the year. Another problem with the whole new years resolution, is 75% of them are not met. I think there is a reason behind this. Most new years resolutions are thought of in the last few days of the year, so that come January 1st you are ready to start, but by the end of January you have forgotten all about it, and this is because you actually had to think about it. I think that if this change was so important to you that you were going to commit to it for a full year, or even longer, than you would start ASAP. If you have the initiative to start doing something, why pick a date to do so? If this change was so important to you that you have to set a date to start, why not make it today?
So first off a new years resolution is a commitment somebody makes to either perform a personal goal/project or to change a habit. So the New Years tradition has been passed down over the years with it starting as a religious tradition of praying and reaffirming your strong Christian values etc. Whereas it has shifted to people thinking a year has passed what is an achievable self goal that I have not fulfilled. So out of this old tradition it has actually transitioned into something fairly beneficial to most people because it really highlights to themselves what is most important for them to change about this New Year. However these people (including myself) are not self motivated enough to achieve their own goals. This is because frankly those who set New Years resolutions are not motivated and they simply set one because it is the "in" thing to do. A truly self motivated individual who sees the benefits of themselves achieving this goal, would not wait until it is fashionable to make a change! Therefore the principle of self motivation does not entirely match the idea of a New Years Resolution. But hey if any person gets motivated enough and actually achieves their personal goal it makes this tradition beneficial! Xander
