After hearing about the intensity of Hurricane Sandy and her effect on the places hit hardest like Jamaica and New York, I realized how frequent these natural disasters are becoming and how they are having extremely detrimental effects on our world. For example, Hurricane Sandy ,which is said to have cost about $60 billion in damage, Katrina $81.2 billion, the Japan tsunami $300 billion, and for the drought in places like Africa, $9 billion has had to be contributed by the World Bank on agriculture support, the highest level in 20 years. All of this money could be spent on countless things that could better the way we live, and there needs to be a way to prevent the severity of the disasters’ effects. The severity of these disasters are overcoming and abolishing the way we go about getting natural resources that are a necessity to our lives. Farming, Oil and Fresh water availability are a few of the necessary resources being taken away from us due to these natural disasters. The storms are taking away the most valuable resources that contribute to the world’s sustainability. I think that the way we go about getting these resources is going to have to change in order to prevent these disasters from having the effect that they are currently. I have found a website that talks about “skyscraper farming”, and how it is what we may have to turn to in order to sustain these resources especially in the most vulnerable places in the world. It’s scary to think that the negative change in our environment is going to force us to lose touch with nature, due to nature itself
Once I herd about the shooting of Malala Yousafzai, I was shocked that the Taliban can get away with actions like these. I think that it is wrong that no one is being punished for the attack on Malala. The Taliban should not get way with attempted murder. The Taliban’s extremist actions should be monitored by a higher power, and those responsible should be punished. Although they can blame their actions on religion, there should be a case where people have a freedom of speech and are allowed to say what they want. Since Malala was putting herself on the line and publicly expressing her opinion to the media, I think that she should have been put under protection by the government. Although she was not protected before the shooting, I think the government should take action now that one person has already suffered. Maybe if more children want to make a difference and speak out there should protection offered so they don’t get injured or killed. Malala’s shooting should be a lesson learned and more cases like these should be prevented from now on.
